Step 1: Get out of the building. Your customers aren't in your office.
💡 Customer Discovery tests your hypotheses through real conversations — not to validate your idea, but to find out if the problem even exists.
Customer Discovery is Step 1 of Blank's four-step process, and its mantra is legendary: "Get out of the building."
The goal isn't to sell anything. It's to test whether the problem you think exists actually exists, and whether anyone cares enough to pay for a solution. You do this through customer interviews — not surveys, not focus groups — real conversations with potential users.
Here's the key: you're not validating your product idea. You're testing your hypotheses. Who is the customer? What problem do they have? How do they solve it today? Would they pay for something better? Every answer either confirms or invalidates an assumption.
Most founders skip this and go straight to building. But Blank's data shows that startups that do rigorous Customer Discovery pivot earlier and fail less. You'd rather discover your idea is wrong after 30 interviews than after 18 months of engineering.
