Steps 3 and 4: Most startups try to scale before they're ready. Here's how to know.
💡 Don't hire sales teams, build departments, or spend on marketing until you have a validated, repeatable business model. Steps 1-2 must come first.
Customer Creation (Step 3) and Company Building (Step 4) only start after Customer Validation succeeds. This is Blank's most important structural point: don't scale before you've found a repeatable business model.
Customer Creation is about driving demand into your validated sales channel. The approach depends on your market type: in an existing market, you spend big on positioning against competitors. In a new market, you spend carefully on education and community-building. In a resegmented market, you own your niche before expanding.
Company Building transitions the organization from a learning machine to an execution machine. You replace the founder-driven chaos with departments, processes, and management layers. This is when you hire a VP of Sales (not before!), build a real marketing team, and formalize operations.
Blank's warning: most startup failures come from executing Steps 3 and 4 before completing Steps 1 and 2. Hiring a sales team before you have a repeatable sales process is like pouring fuel on a fire that doesn't exist.
