Attention is all you need — the 8-word paper title that changed everything
💡 Transformers process all tokens in parallel via self-attention, enabling the massive scale that powers modern AI.
In 2017, a team at Google published a paper with a bold title: "Attention Is All You Need." It introduced the Transformer architecture, and it's not an exaggeration to say it changed the world.
Before transformers, AI processed text word by word (RNNs). The breakthrough was self-attention: the ability to look at all words in a sentence simultaneously and figure out which ones relate to each other. "The cat sat on the mat because it was tired" — attention helps the model know "it" refers to "cat," not "mat."
This parallelism made transformers dramatically faster to train than RNNs, which is why we could scale them to billions of parameters. GPT, Claude, Gemini — they're all built on this architecture. The original paper has been cited over 100,000 times.
