How Claude teaches itself to be helpful — without humans labeling every answer
💡 Constitutional AI lets Claude self-improve by critiquing its own outputs against a set of principles — reducing the need for human labeling.
Training an AI to be helpful, harmless, and honest usually requires millions of human-labeled examples. Anthropic found a shortcut: teach the AI to critique itself.
The technique is called Constitutional AI (CAI). Here's how it works: First, Claude generates a response. Then it's asked to critique that response against a set of principles (the "constitution"). Finally, it revises its answer based on its own critique.
This self-improvement loop means you need far fewer human annotators. The constitution includes principles like "Choose the response that is most helpful" and "Choose the response that is least likely to be harmful." It's like giving the AI a moral compass and letting it navigate.
