Your AI agent is only as good as its tools — and most teams design them wrong

💡 Tool design matters as much as prompts. Apply poka-yoke (mistake-proofing): make tool interfaces so clear that misuse becomes structurally impossible.

Anthropic's engineering team found that tool design deserves just as much prompt engineering attention as the main system prompt. A poorly designed tool interface causes more agent failures than a poorly written prompt.

Their key principles: minimize cognitive load — make tool usage obvious from the name and parameters alone. Include comprehensive documentation — examples, edge cases, input formats, and clear boundaries in every tool description. Apply poka-yoke (mistake-proofing) — design arguments so errors become impossible.

A real example: their SWE-bench coding agent kept failing because it used relative file paths. The fix wasn't better prompting — it was requiring absolute paths in the tool interface. The error became structurally impossible.

Think of it as designing an API for a very smart but very literal colleague. If the function signature is ambiguous, they'll interpret it differently than you expect. If the docs are sparse, they'll guess. If the error messages are vague, they'll spiral. The best agent tools are so well-designed that misuse is nearly impossible.
