Your gut feeling matters — red flags to watch for from birth to age 5

💡 Trust your parental instincts, know the age-appropriate red flags, and remember: early evaluation only helps — it never hurts.

Parents often notice something before anyone else does. If your gut says something feels off, trust that instinct — you know your child better than any checklist. That said, here are signs that warrant a conversation with your pediatrician.

Birth to 12 months: Not babbling by 9 months. No back-and-forth gestures (waving, pointing) by 12 months. Not responding to their name. Limited eye contact or social smiling. Difficulty with tummy time or sitting up by 9 months.

Ages 1-3: No single words by 16 months. No two-word phrases by 24 months. Losing skills they once had (this one is always worth investigating). Walking significantly later than 18 months. Difficulty with simple instructions. Repetitive movements like hand-flapping or spinning.

Ages 3-5: Speech that's hard for strangers to understand. Difficulty playing with other children. Extreme reactions to textures, sounds, or changes in routine. Trouble with self-care skills like dressing or using the toilet well beyond typical timelines.

Important: Hitting a milestone late doesn't automatically mean there's a problem. But early evaluation never hurts — if everything is fine, you get peace of mind. If support is needed, starting early makes a huge difference.
