Speech therapy 101 — it's not just about talking

💡 Speech therapy covers all communication — not just talking. The real magic happens when you practice strategies at home between sessions.

Many parents hear "speech therapy" and picture someone drilling pronunciation with flashcards. In reality, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work on far more than spoken words. They address the entire communication system: understanding language, expressing needs, social communication, feeding and swallowing, and even the oral motor skills that make speech physically possible.

For young children, speech therapy often looks like play. The therapist might blow bubbles to encourage requesting ("more!"), read books to build vocabulary, or use songs and games to practice turn-taking. For older children, sessions might focus on conversation skills, understanding figurative language, or building narrative abilities.

If your child is pre-verbal or nonverbal, an SLP can introduce alternative communication methods — like picture exchange systems, sign language, or speech-generating devices. The goal isn't always spoken words; it's giving your child a reliable way to express what's inside them.

Sessions typically happen 1-3 times per week, lasting 30-60 minutes. But the real magic happens between sessions. Your SLP should give you home strategies — simple things to weave into meals, bath time, and play. Ask for them if they don't offer. You are your child's most frequent communication partner, and your involvement multiplies the impact.
