How does AI understand words? It secretly turns them into numbers
💡 AI understands language by converting words into numerical coordinates, so that similar meanings end up physically close together on a map of meaning.
Computers can't read language the way you do — they only do math. So before an AI can process the word "dog," it converts that word into a long list of numbers called an embedding. Think of it as a set of coordinates that pins each word to a specific spot on a giant invisible map of meaning.
The magic is where words land on this map. Words with similar meanings sit close together: "dog" and "puppy" are neighbors, while "dog" and "spreadsheet" are far apart. The AI learns these positions by reading enormous amounts of text and noticing which words tend to appear in similar contexts. Nobody hand-labels them — the pattern emerges on its own.
Because meaning becomes geometry, the AI can do surprising things, like measuring how related two sentences are simply by checking how close their number-lists are. This is the quiet engine behind search results, recommendations, and an AI's ability to grasp that "the capital of France" and "Paris" are deeply connected.
Embeddings aren't just for words — images, audio, and even entire documents can be turned into these coordinate lists, letting AI compare wildly different things on the same map.
