Why AI Forgets You the Moment You Close the Chat

💡 AI doesn't truly remember — it re-reads everything in a limited context window each turn, and anything outside that window is simply gone.

It feels like your AI assistant knows you — until you start a fresh chat and it greets you like a stranger. That's not a bug. Most AI chatbots are stateless: each new conversation starts with a blank slate, because the model itself doesn't store memories between sessions.

Within a single conversation, the AI only 'remembers' what fits inside its context window — a limited workspace measured in tokens (chunks of words). Everything you've said, plus the AI's own replies, gets stuffed into this window and re-read every time it responds. Think of it like a whiteboard: the model can see everything currently written, but nothing that's been erased or was never on the board.

When a conversation grows longer than the window allows, the oldest messages fall off the edge and the AI genuinely loses access to them. This is why it can suddenly 'forget' a detail you mentioned an hour ago. Modern models have huge windows (hundreds of thousands of tokens), but they're still finite.

So how do apps seem to remember you across days? They don't rely on the model's mind — they feed your saved details back into the context window at the start of each chat, quietly re-writing the whiteboard so it looks like continuity.
