The AWS setup you'll never click through again

💡 CloudFormation turns your AWS infrastructure into a reusable text file, so environments are built consistently instead of clicked together by hand.

Spin up a server, a database, and a load balancer by hand in the AWS console and you'll click through dozens of screens. Do it again next month for a staging environment, and you'll click through them all again — probably making a subtly different choice somewhere. This drift is exactly what Infrastructure as Code (IaC) eliminates.

AWS CloudFormation lets you describe your entire cloud setup in a single text file — called a template — written in YAML or JSON. You list the resources you want (an S3 bucket, an EC2 instance, permissions) and their settings, then hand the file to CloudFormation. It reads the template and provisions everything for you as one managed unit called a stack.

The magic is that the template is declarative: you describe the end state you want, not the step-by-step clicks to get there. CloudFormation figures out the order to create things and the dependencies between them. Update the file and re-deploy, and it changes only what differs. Delete the stack, and it cleanly tears down everything it created — no orphaned resources quietly costing you money.

Because the template is just text, you can store it in Git, review changes, and reuse it to spin up identical environments on demand. Your infrastructure becomes versioned, repeatable, and auditable instead of a one-off hand-crafted snowflake.
