Transition planning should start at 14, not 18 — here's why
💡 Begin transition planning at 14 to allow four years of real-world skill building, with self-determination as the keystone.
Under IDEA, transition planning must begin by age 16 (14 in some states). But many families don't think about post-school life until the final IEP year — and by then, critical skill-building windows have passed.
Starting at 14 gives you four years to systematically build independence skills: managing money, navigating public transit, self-advocacy, daily living tasks. These aren't things learned in a semester — they require hundreds of repetitions across real-world contexts.
The most overlooked element: self-determination. Research by Michael Wehmeyer shows that youth with disabilities who practice making choices, setting goals, and solving problems have dramatically better adult outcomes — employment, independent living, life satisfaction — regardless of disability severity.
