How different countries celebrate independence — it's not all fireworks

💡 Independence celebrations worldwide reflect unique cultural values — from Mexico's midnight Grito to Norway's child-led, military-free parades.

Over 60 countries celebrate their independence day between June and September. Each developed unique traditions reflecting their cultural identity, not just American-style fireworks and barbecues.

Mexico's Grito (September 16) features the president re-enacting the 1810 "Cry of Dolores" from the National Palace balcony at 11pm, followed by the crowd shouting "Viva Mexico!" India's Republic Day (January 26) showcases a massive military and cultural parade down Rajpath in New Delhi, with each state competing to build the most impressive float.

Brazil (September 7) celebrates with a civic-military parade in Brasilia, but the real energy is in street parties. Norway (May 17) is unique: children lead the parades, waving flags and eating ice cream, with no military presence at all — a deliberate contrast to their former Swedish and Danish rulers.
