A piece of India is trapped inside a piece of Bangladesh β inside India
π‘ Enclaves are territories entirely surrounded by another country, and the India-Bangladesh border once had the world's most complex nesting of them.
Imagine a chunk of one country completely surrounded by another country. That's called an enclave β and the world's strangest example used to sit on the India-Bangladesh border. There, you could find an Indian territory inside a Bangladeshi territory, inside an Indian territory, inside Bangladesh. It was like geographic nesting dolls.
These bizarre borders were leftovers from centuries-old deals between local rulers, long before modern nations drew clean lines on maps. For the people living in these enclaves, daily life was a nightmare β they often couldn't access hospitals, schools, or markets in the country surrounding them without technically crossing an international border.
In 2015, India and Bangladesh finally agreed to swap over 160 enclaves in a historic Land Boundary Agreement. Around 50,000 people got to choose which country they wanted to belong to. It was one of the largest peaceful border changes in modern history, ending decades of statelessness and confusion for thousands of families.
