There are still peoples on Earth who have never met an outsider

πŸ’‘ Over 100 uncontacted peoples still live apart from the modern world, and protecting their isolation is often the only way to keep them alive.

In the 21st century, with satellites mapping every reef and drones peering into rainforests, it's easy to assume the whole planet has been "discovered." Yet there are still an estimated more than 100 uncontacted peoples β€” communities that live without any peaceful, sustained contact with the wider world. Most are hidden in the dense rainforests of the Amazon basin, especially in Brazil and Peru, with others in the islands of the Bay of Bengal and the highlands of West Papua.

The most famous are the Sentinelese, who live on North Sentinel Island in India's Andaman archipelago. They have inhabited the island for possibly tens of thousands of years and have repeatedly, and sometimes violently, rejected outside visitors. India now enforces an exclusion zone around the island, making it illegal to approach β€” a law meant to protect both the islanders and would-be intruders.

The reason for this hands-off approach isn't just respect for privacy. Isolated peoples have no immunity to common diseases like flu, measles, or even the common cold. A single casual encounter can trigger epidemics that wipe out large portions of a community. For groups like the Sentinelese, being left alone is quite literally a matter of survival.
