The safest crib is a boring crib

💡 For a baby under 1, keep the crib bare — firm flat mattress, fitted sheet, baby on their back, and a sleep sack instead of loose blankets.

It feels wrong. We decorate nurseries with plush bumpers, quilts, and stuffed animals — then learn that for a baby under 1, the safest sleep space is almost empty. The guidance is deliberately minimalist: a firm, flat mattress, a fitted sheet, and nothing else. No pillows, no blankets, no bumper pads, no toys.

The reason is that infants can't reliably move soft objects away from their faces, which raises the risk of suffocation and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Crib bumpers were sold for decades to prevent bumped heads, but the evidence showed they posed a suffocation and strangulation hazard with no real safety benefit — so in the U.S. they were banned from sale in 2022.

Two simple habits do most of the protective work. Always place a baby on their back for every sleep — naps included — until their first birthday. And instead of a loose blanket, use a wearable blanket or sleep sack to keep them warm without anything covering the face. Room-share (baby in your room, on their own separate surface) but don't bed-share.

The emotional pull toward a cozy, cushioned crib is strong — but for young babies, cozy and safe point in opposite directions.
