The furniture in your child's room can tip over — here's the fix

💡 Heavy furniture isn't stable furniture — anchoring tall pieces to the wall prevents one of the most common and preventable childhood injuries.

Dressers, bookshelves, and TVs look like fixtures — but to a curious toddler, an open drawer is a staircase. When a child climbs or pulls, their weight shifts the furniture's center of gravity forward, and a piece that felt rock-solid can topple in an instant. This is called a furniture tip-over, and it's one of the most preventable hidden hazards in a child's room.

The key insight: weight doesn't equal stability. A heavy dresser is actually more dangerous when it falls, and pulling out the drawers turns it into both a ladder and a lever. That's why child-safety experts recommend anchoring tall or top-heavy furniture to a wall stud using an anti-tip strap or bracket — inexpensive hardware that comes with many new pieces or costs a few dollars at a hardware store.

You don't need to childproof everything at once. Start with the pieces a child is most likely to climb — the dresser near the crib, the bookshelf by the toy bin, the TV on a low stand. Anchoring takes minutes and gives you one less thing to worry about as your little one becomes a determined little climber.
