Why you should quarter every grape

💡 A toddler's airway is straw-width, so cut round foods like grapes lengthwise to destroy the plug shape that can seal it.

A young child's windpipe is roughly the width of a drinking straw — about as wide as their pinky finger. That's why round, firm, or slippery foods are so dangerous: a whole grape, a coin-shaped hot dog slice, or a spoonful of nut butter can form a tight plug that completely seals a small airway. Choking is a leading cause of injury and death in children under 4, and food is the most common culprit.

A simple rule for objects: if something fits through a toilet-paper tube (about 1.75 inches / 4.4 cm across), it can lodge in a toddler's throat — so keep coins, button batteries, marbles, and small toy parts out of reach. For food, change the shape, not just the size. Cut round foods like grapes, cherry tomatoes, and hot dogs lengthwise into quarters so no piece keeps its round, plug-like form.

Also worth doing: have kids eat sitting down and calm (not walking, playing, or in a moving car), and skip high-risk foods like whole nuts, popcorn, hard candy, and raw carrot chunks until they're older. Every child is different, so follow your pediatrician's guidance — but changing food shape is a small habit that meaningfully lowers the odds.
