Stop scrolling search results — command the search box instead

💡 A handful of search operators like site:, quotes, and minus let you filter results before you see them — finding answers in one search instead of ten.

Most people type a few words into a search engine and then dig through pages of results. But the search box quietly accepts search operators — small commands that filter results before you ever see them. Learning three or four of them turns a frustrating hunt into a direct hit.

The most useful is site: — typing site:reddit.com best budget headphones searches only Reddit, perfect when you trust one source or a site's own search is terrible. Wrap a phrase in quotation marks ("exact phrase") to force an exact match instead of loosely related pages. Add a minus sign to exclude a word: jaguar speed -car skips the automobile and finds the animal.

Two more save real time: filetype:pdf surfaces documents like manuals or research papers directly, and intitle: requires your word to appear in the page's title, filtering out pages that merely mention it in passing. These work across most major search engines and take seconds to type.

The shift is mental: instead of accepting whatever the algorithm guesses you meant, you tell it exactly what to include, exclude, and where to look.
