Skip the iron: steam is doing the real work

đŸ’¡ Wrinkles are held by water-sensitive bonds, so moisture plus heat—not heat alone—is what actually smooths fabric.

Hate ironing? Toss the wrinkled shirt into the dryer with a damp towel (or a few ice cubes) and run it hot for 10 minutes. It comes out noticeably smoother — and understanding why means you'll never need the iron for a quick fix again.

Fabric wrinkles because the long molecules in cotton and wool are held in a crumpled shape by weak hydrogen bonds. Heat alone barely touches them, but water plus heat does: moisture lets the bonds break and re-form, and gravity or tumbling pulls the fibers back toward straight before they re-set. That's the same principle behind a steam iron — the steam, not just the hot plate, is what relaxes the cloth.

This is why hanging a shirt in a steamy bathroom during a hot shower quietly de-wrinkles it, and why spritzing a garment with water before ironing works so much better than a dry press. No steam, no reset — a bone-dry iron mostly just flattens.
