The 3 kinds of media — and why one is worth the most
💡 Owned media you control, paid media you buy, and earned media others give you for free — and earned is the most trusted because you can't just pay for it.
Every marketing channel falls into one of three buckets, a framework popularized around 2009 and still used by teams today. Owned media is anything you control: your website, blog, email list, and app. It's essentially free to use and yours forever, but you have to build the audience yourself.
Paid media is exposure you buy: search and social ads, billboards, sponsored posts, and yes — paying an influencer to feature you. It's fast and scalable, but the moment you stop paying, it stops working. Earned media is attention other people give you for free: press coverage, word-of-mouth, customer reviews, and organic shares. When Wendy's snarky tweets get screenshotted across the internet, that reach is earned.
The key insight: earned media is the hardest to buy and the most trusted, because it comes from people with no obligation to praise you. Smart marketers use owned and paid channels not as ends in themselves, but as engines that spark the earned buzz money can't directly purchase.
