The tool that turns your laptop into a private ChatGPT

💡 Ollama packages the hard parts of running AI models so anyone can run a private, offline chatbot on their own machine with a single command.

Ollama is an open-source project that lets you download and run large language models entirely on your own computer — no cloud account, no API key, no data leaving your machine. After installing it, a single command like ollama run llama3 pulls the model and drops you into a chat prompt. Under the hood it's written in Go and wraps the highly optimized llama.cpp inference engine, handling the messy parts — downloading model weights, managing memory, and exposing a clean local API — so you don't have to.

Why does this matter? Running models locally means your prompts stay private, you pay nothing per token, and everything keeps working offline. Ollama also runs a small local web server (on port 11434) that speaks an API, so developers can wire it into their own apps, editors, and scripts exactly as they would a commercial provider — but pointed at their own hardware.

The project exploded in popularity because it collapsed a genuinely painful setup — compiling inference code, hunting for compatible model files, tuning GPU settings — into one install and one command. That low friction is what turned local AI from a hobbyist ordeal into something a curious beginner can try in minutes.
