Ratings and reviews: the content you don't write but must manage
💡 Reviews are the most trusted PDP content and a ranking signal — you can't write them, but you can seed volume honestly, respond to negatives, and mine them to improve product and content.
Ratings and reviews are unusual: they're the most trusted content on the PDP precisely because the brand didn't write them. Shoppers routinely read reviews before anything else, and the numbers are stark — a rating dropping below roughly 4.0 stars, or having very few reviews at all, sharply depresses conversion. Reviews also feed search ranking, so they're a discovery lever too.
You can't write them, but you can manage the review ecosystem:
- Seed volume honestly — sampling programs, post-purchase follow-ups, and retailer review programs to escape the "3 reviews" cold-start. - Respond to negative reviews — a thoughtful reply reassures the next reader more than the original complaint hurt. - Mine reviews as feedback — recurring complaints ("runs small," "confusing setup") are a free roadmap: fix the product, and pre-empt the objection in your bullets and images. - Watch for authenticity rules — incentivized or fake reviews violate retailer policies and can get you penalized.
The pro move is treating reviews as a two-way loop: they inform the rest of your content (a common "runs small" complaint becomes a sizing infographic), and better content in turn produces happier, higher-rated customers.
