The product title: your hardest-working 200 characters
💡 The title must serve humans and algorithms at once — front-load real search terms in a Brand + Attribute + Type pattern, avoid stuffing, and tailor a variant to each retailer's rules.
The title is the single most valuable text field on a PDP because it works everywhere: the search results grid, the browser tab, ads, and the retailer's ranking algorithm. It has to be readable by humans and legible to machines at the same time.
A durable pattern most retailers reward looks like:
[Brand] + [Model/Line] + [Key Attribute] + [Product Type] + [Size/Count/Variant]
Bose QuietComfort Wireless Noise-Cancelling Headphones, Over-Ear, BlackFront-load the words shoppers actually search, because both the human eye and the algorithm weight the start most. But beware the two failure modes: keyword stuffing (an unreadable pile of terms that retailers now penalize and humans distrust) and vagueness ("Premium Headphones" — invisible in search, unconvincing to buyers).
Complicating everything: every retailer has different rules — character limits, whether promotional words like "Best" are banned, required attribute order. The same product needs a title variant per retailer. That's a recurring theme: content isn't one thing you write once, it's a set of retailer-specific versions you manage.
