How a click becomes a purchase (and where brands lose the sale)
💡 Online buying is a sequential funnel — search, browse, PDP, cart, review — and weakness at any single stage quietly loses shoppers before they reach the next.
A typical online purchase runs through a predictable funnel, and each step is a place you can win or lose the shopper:
Search → Browse results → Product page (PDP) → Add to cart → Buy → ReviewSearch is where the shopper types intent ("wireless headphones for running"). If you don't rank, you're invisible — the journey ends before it starts. Browse is the results grid: your thumbnail, title, price, star rating, and badges compete against a screen full of rivals for the click. The product page is where the actual convincing happens — images, bullets, description, Q&A, reviews. Add to cart and buy depend on price, availability, and trust. Reviews then feed back into the next shopper's decision.
The key insight: the funnel is leaky and sequential. Great reviews don't help if you never rank in search. A perfect page doesn't help if you're out of stock. Winning the digital shelf means being strong at every stage, because each one silently filters out shoppers before the next.
