Who's who on the digital shelf

💡 Brands make the content, retailers own the shelf and its rules, and a vendor ecosystem (Salsify, Profitero, Stackline…) provides the tooling — knowing who controls what reveals where leverage lies.

The digital shelf has a cast of players, and confusing them is a common beginner mistake:

- Brands / manufacturers — the companies whose products are sold (Nestlé, Sony, a small DTC startup). They create the content but often don't control where it's displayed. - Retailers & marketplaces — Amazon, Walmart, Target, Kroger, Instacart. They own the shelf, set the rules, run the search algorithm, and decide the final display. - The 1P vs 3P distinction — in 1P (first-party), the brand sells to the retailer, who resells it; in 3P (third-party), the brand sells directly to shoppers on the marketplace and just pays fees. This changes who controls pricing and content. - Solution vendors — the tooling ecosystem that grew up to help brands: Salsify and Akeneo (PIM/syndication), Profitero, DataWeave, Stackline, CommerceIQ (analytics, share of shelf, retail media). Their blogs, incidentally, are some of the best free education in the field.

Understanding who controls what — content, price, ranking, display — tells you where a brand actually has leverage, and where it's playing on someone else's field.
