Attributes: the atoms the whole digital shelf is built from
💡 Attributes are structured key–value facts that populate the page, power search filters, drive ranking, and feed AI answers — missing attributes make a product invisible to anyone filtering for them.
Under every product page is a set of attributes — structured key–value facts about the product:
{
"color": "Charcoal",
"material": "Merino wool",
"sleeve_length": "Long",
"machine_washable": true,
"weight_grams": 320,
"care_instructions": "Cold wash, lay flat to dry"
}Attributes look mundane, but they're the atoms everything else is built from. They populate the visible page (the spec table, the bullets). They power search filters — the "Merino wool" and "machine washable" checkboxes shoppers click to narrow results. They drive discovery, because retailers rank and match products partly on attribute completeness and accuracy. And increasingly they're what AI answer engines read to decide if your product fits a shopper's described need.
That's why "fill in your attributes" is one of the highest-leverage, least glamorous jobs in the field. A missing sleeve_length doesn't just leave a blank in a table — it makes the product invisible to everyone filtering for long-sleeve options, and mute to an AI asked for "a warm long-sleeve wool top." Structured attributes are how a product becomes machine-understandable, which is the precondition for being found at all.
