Syndication: broadcasting your catalog to every retailer
💡 Syndication distributes PIM content to each retailer in its required format and transport — and because it often fails silently, it must be paired with reading the live shelf back to confirm delivery.
Having perfect data in your PIM is worthless if it never reaches the shelf. Syndication is the process of distributing your product content out to every retailer, marketplace, and channel — and it's deceptively hard, because every destination wants the data its own way.
The obstacles are all about translation and delivery:
- Different formats & fields — Amazon wants specific flat-file templates and bullet limits; Walmart wants its spec; a distributor wants a feed. The same golden record must be reshaped for each. - Different transport — some retailers take an API, some a spreadsheet upload, some a data pool like GDSN (a standardized network many grocery/CPG retailers use). - Confirmation & errors — did it actually land? Syndication routinely fails silently: rejected rows, truncated fields, images that didn't transfer.
This is why the audit from Series 2 exists — because "published" and "live" are not the same thing until you verify. Mature syndication is a two-way street: push content out, then read the live shelf back to confirm it arrived intact. Good PIM platforms increasingly close this loop automatically, but the concept is what matters: syndication is where your governed data meets the messy reality of dozens of retailer systems.
