The four flavors of shopper query
💡 Shopper queries range across generic, long-tail/attribute, branded, and problem-based types — long-tail and problem queries convert best because intent is explicit, and rich attributes are what let you capture them.
Not all searches are the same, and sorting them helps you target content precisely. Most retail queries fall into four types along a spectrum from "just browsing" to "ready to buy":
- Generic / category — "coffee maker," "running shoes." High volume, undecided shopper, fierce competition. Winning these is about broad relevance plus strong conversion signals. - Attribute / long-tail — "small quiet coffee maker for one person." Lower volume, but the shopper has told you exactly what they want. If your attributes match, conversion is high and competition is thinner. - Branded — "Nespresso Vertuo," "Nike Pegasus." The shopper wants a specific brand; the job is to be present and win the click (and to defend your brand terms from competitors' ads). - Problem / need-based — "how to make coffee without electricity," "gift for a coffee lover." The shopper describes a situation, not a product — increasingly important because it's exactly how people phrase questions to AI assistants.
The strategic point: long-tail and problem-based queries convert best because intent is explicit, yet brands often obsess only over the crowded generic terms. A smart program covers the whole spectrum — and rich, complete attributes (Series 3!) are what let you capture the specific, high-converting long-tail.
