Measuring share of search: your visibility, made countable
💡 Share of search measures the percentage of top results (organic + paid) you occupy for a weighted keyword basket — segmented and trended, it's the feedback gauge for the whole search pillar and an early warning of competitive threats.
To manage retail search you have to measure it, and the headline metric is share of search (a close relative of share of shelf): for a defined basket of important keywords, what percentage of the top results — organic and sponsored — do your products occupy?
Doing it well takes a little rigor:
- Pick the keyword basket deliberately — your priority intents from the intent-to-SKU map, weighted by search volume, not a random grab-bag. - Weight by position — slot #1 is worth far more than slot #20; a good score reflects where you appear, not just whether you do. - Segment — by retailer, by category, by branded vs. non-branded terms, and by organic vs. paid, so the number is diagnosable rather than a vanity figure. - Track the trend — the direction matters more than the absolute. A steady share-of-search decline on core terms is an early warning that a competitor is out-optimizing you or outbidding you — visible weeks before your sales dip.
Measured this way, share of search becomes the feedback gauge for the whole search pillar: it tells you whether your content fixes, attribute work, and ad spend are actually winning more of the shopper's attention. It's the number that closes search's own measure → diagnose → fix loop — and it feeds directly into the operating model we'll assemble in the final series. Next, though, the newest frontier: showing up not just in search results, but inside AI-generated answers.
