Dark Chocolate Is Genuinely Good for You — But Only Above 70% Cacao

💡 Dark chocolate above 70% cacao genuinely reduces cardiovascular risk thanks to flavanols — but milk chocolate provides almost no benefit, and the ideal dose is about 30-60 grams daily.

This isn't wishful thinking — dark chocolate has genuine, clinically demonstrated health benefits. A large-scale study in the BMJ tracking over 100,000 participants found that regular dark chocolate consumption was associated with a 37% reduction in cardiovascular disease and a 29% reduction in stroke risk. But the key word is "dark" — and there's a specific threshold.

The benefits come from flavanols, a type of antioxidant found in cacao beans. Flavanols improve blood vessel function by boosting nitric oxide production, which relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. They also reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and even enhance blood flow to the brain — studies show measurable improvements in cognitive performance after consuming high-flavanol cocoa.

Here's the catch: milk chocolate contains almost no beneficial flavanols. The processing that makes chocolate sweet and creamy destroys most of them. To get real benefits, you need chocolate that is at least 70% cacao, and even then, the amount matters — studies typically show benefits from about 30-60 grams per day (one to two ounces). More than that and the sugar and calorie content starts canceling out the benefits. It's medicine, but it comes with a dosage.
