You're Mostly Empty Space — Atoms Are 99.9999% Nothing
💡 Atoms are 99.9999% empty space, and what we experience as 'solid matter' is actually electromagnetic repulsion between electron clouds — you've never truly touched anything.
If you could zoom into any atom, you'd find a tiny nucleus surrounded by electrons. But "surrounded" is misleading — those electrons orbit at enormous relative distances. If the nucleus were the size of a marble, the nearest electron would be about half a mile away. Everything in between? Empty space.
This means you — yes, you personally — are 99.9999999% empty space. If you could remove all the empty space from every atom in every person on Earth, the entire human race would fit inside a volume the size of a sugar cube. A very heavy sugar cube (it would still have all the mass), but a sugar cube nonetheless.
So why do you feel solid? Why doesn't your hand pass through the table? It's not because atoms are physically touching — they never do. It's because of the electromagnetic force. The negatively charged electron clouds of your hand's atoms repel the electron clouds of the table's atoms. What you experience as "touching" something is actually electromagnetic repulsion between electron fields. You've never truly touched anything in your life.
