Ikigai is smaller — and more everyday — than the Venn diagram

💡 Ikigai is your everyday reason to get up — often small and specific, not a single grand life-purpose.

The word ikigai roughly means "a reason to get up in the morning" — from iki (life) and gai (worth or value). In the West it's usually drawn as a four-circle Venn diagram (what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, what you can be paid for). Longhurst gently pushes back on that.

In the book, ikigai is rarely so grand. It doesn't have to be your job or your grand purpose. It can be as small as the morning coffee you look forward to, a hobby, a person, or a garden. It's the specific thing that gives an ordinary day its sense of worth.

That reframing matters: treating ikigai as a career-optimization puzzle can make people anxious. Treating it as the accumulation of small daily reasons to be present makes it accessible to anyone, at any stage of life.
