You Could Leave Life Right Now
💡 Remembering you will die is a tool for focusing on living rightly in the only moment you have — this one.
Marcus meditates on death more than almost any other subject — not morbidly, but as fuel for living well. "You could leave life right now," he writes. "Let that determine what you do and say and think." Awareness of mortality — memento mori — sharpens priorities and burns away triviality.
He also uses death to shrink the ego. Whole dynasties, famous names, entire generations are swallowed and forgotten; even the longest life and the shortest lose exactly the same thing — the fleeting present moment, which is all anyone ever truly has. Fame is smoke; posthumous reputation, meaningless to the dead.
Far from depressing, this makes the present precious. If time is short and the past and future are not yours, then the only rational move is to live this moment with integrity, right now.
