See Things As They Actually Are

💡 Describe things stripped of their emotional labels, and both their false allure and false threat evaporate.

Marcus practices a method of stripping away the stories we layer onto experience — call it objective description. Roasted meat is a dead animal; fine wine is fermented grape juice; the purple imperial robe is sheep's wool dyed with shellfish blood. By naming things plainly, he deflates their false glamour and false terror alike.

The same tool defuses anxiety. Break an overwhelming situation into its bare components, examine each part as it truly is, and the exaggerated fears often collapse. "Never let the future disturb you," he notes — you'll meet it with the same reason you use on the present.

This is Stoic clarity: perception unclouded by hype, gossip, or dread. When you see an event stripped of the value-judgments piled on top, you can respond to reality rather than to your inflamed impression of it.
