You Were Made for Each Other

💡 We are made for cooperation, so justice and kindness are natural — and doing good is its own reward.

For all its focus on the inner life, Meditations is deeply social. Humans, Marcus insists, are made for cooperation like hands, feet, and eyelids — "to work against one another is contrary to nature." We are limbs of a single body, and to withdraw from your fellow humans is to amputate yourself from the whole.

This grounds his ethics of justice and kindness. When someone wrongs you, remember they're a relative, acting out of ignorance of what's truly good; you were born to work with them, not against them. Anger at others is often just a failure to understand them.

Marcus even makes doing good its own reward: don't act well to be thanked or noticed — a vine doesn't demand praise for bearing grapes. The good person keeps producing good, quietly, because that is simply what they are.
