The 75 richest people in history share a strange pattern. It's not what you'd guess.

💡 The biggest successes cluster around specific birth years — being the right age when a transformative opportunity arrives matters enormously.

Gladwell compiled a list of the 75 richest people in human history (adjusted for inflation) and found something remarkable: 14 of them were Americans born within 9 years of each other, between 1831 and 1840. That's John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Jay Gould, J.P. Morgan, and others.

Why? Because they came of age in the 1860s and 1870s — precisely when the American economy was being transformed by railroads and Wall Street. Being born too early meant you were too set in your ways. Being born too late meant someone else had already seized the opportunity. There was a narrow window, and birth year determined who could climb through it.

Gladwell finds the same pattern in tech: an extraordinary number of Silicon Valley titans — Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Eric Schmidt, Bill Joy, Paul Allen — were born between 1953 and 1956. Old enough to be skilled by 1975 when the personal computer revolution began, young enough to take the risk. Even in revolution, timing is everything.
