Exercise is the most powerful longevity 'drug' — and it's not even close

💡 VO2 max is the strongest predictor of longevity — stronger than not smoking. Prioritize Zone 2 cardio (3-4 hrs/week) and strength training (3-4 sessions/week).

If exercise were a pill, it would be the most prescribed drug in history. Attia presents data showing that cardiorespiratory fitness (measured by VO2 max) is the single strongest predictor of how long you'll live — stronger than smoking, diabetes, or heart disease as risk factors.

The numbers are staggering: someone in the bottom 25% of VO2 max for their age has a 4x higher risk of death compared to someone in the top 2.3%. Going from the bottom 25% to just above average reduces mortality risk more than quitting smoking.

Attia breaks exercise into two non-negotiable categories: Zone 2 cardio (the intensity where you can just barely hold a conversation — about 60-70% of max heart rate) and strength training. Zone 2 improves mitochondrial function and metabolic health. Strength preserves the muscle mass and bone density you'll desperately need in your 70s, 80s, and beyond.

His prescription: 3-4 hours of Zone 2 per week plus 3-4 strength sessions. Most people do neither enough.
