The wounds you can't remember are running your life

💡 Much of your adult emotional reactivity is childhood emotion that was suppressed before you had the words or logic to process it.

Brown introduces the Emotional Body — a reservoir of feeling we accumulate, especially in the first seven years of life. In that window, before we can reason, we absorb emotional 'charges' from our environment that get suppressed and stored rather than processed.

He calls these stored charges emotional imprints. Because they were felt before we had language or logic, they operate beneath conscious memory — you may have no recollection of the original event, yet its emotional residue still shapes how you react as an adult.

This is why, Brown says, we can be 'triggered' by things that seem trivial. The trigger isn't the real cause; it's a key that opens an old, unfinished feeling. Understanding the Emotional Body reframes your overreactions as messages from the past, not evidence that something is wrong with the present.
