The people who upset you are messengers

💡 The person who triggers you is a messenger showing you your own unintegrated emotion — owning that reaction is where your power returns.

One of Brown's most challenging ideas is the messenger principle: the people and situations that trigger you are not your problem — they're your mirror. They reflect back the unintegrated emotion you're carrying so you can finally see and feel it.

This reframes blame entirely. As long as we insist someone else is the cause of our feeling, we hand them control and stay stuck. Brown urges a shift from blame to responsibility — not moral fault, but 'response-ability,' the capacity to own and work with your own emotional charge.

Crucially, this doesn't mean tolerating harmful behavior. It means recognizing that your emotional reaction belongs to you, and that the messenger — however unpleasant — has revealed exactly which imprint is ready for integration.
