The power of not knowing

💡 Honest not-knowing clears away borrowed beliefs so fresh, direct insight can appear.

For Adyashanti, the most fertile state for inquiry is not knowing — an open, honest "I don't actually know." Our minds hate this; they scramble to cover uncertainty with borrowed beliefs and secondhand answers. But every pre-packaged answer blocks the fresh seeing that inquiry requires.

He describes not knowing not as ignorance but as a kind of innocence — a willingness to meet your experience without the filter of prior conclusions. This is close to what Zen calls beginner's mind. In that unguarded openness, insight can arrive that the busy, certain mind would have shut out.

Paradoxically, admitting you don't know is what makes real knowing — the direct, recognized kind — possible.
