The 3:1 ratio that separates billion-dollar SaaS companies from failures

💡 LTV:CAC of 3:1 is the benchmark. Below that, growth is unsustainable. Above 5:1, you're under-investing.

The most important ratio in SaaS: LTV:CAC. Lifetime Value divided by Customer Acquisition Cost. If it costs you $100 to acquire a customer who generates $300 over their lifetime, your ratio is 3:1.

Below 1:1 = you're paying more to acquire customers than they're worth. You're literally burning money. 1:1 to 3:1 = you might survive, but margins are thin and growth is hard. 3:1 or above = the sweet spot. You have room to invest in growth. Above 5:1 = you're probably under-investing in growth and leaving money on the table.

The best SaaS companies also obsess over CAC payback period — how many months until a customer's revenue pays back the acquisition cost. Under 12 months is good. Under 6 is exceptional.
