Love that only crowns you also crucifies you

💡 Real love is a total surrender that transforms you through pain as much as joy — it seeks neither to possess nor be possessed.

The first and longest sermon is On Love, and Gibran refuses to make it comfortable. Love, he says, will "crown you" but also "crucify you"; it will "thresh you to make you naked" and "grind you to whiteness" before it can "ascend to your height." To love is to be broken open, not merely pleased.

His instruction is radical: surrender. "When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep." You do not direct love or bargain with it; you let it possess you as fire tempers the vine. To fear love's pain, Gibran warns, is to accept only its "threshing-floor" without its harvest.

Crucially, love in Gibran is not possession. "Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; for love is sufficient unto love." The goal is not to hold another person but to be transformed by the loving.
