The real gift is when you give yourself
💡 True giving means offering yourself freely and without judgment — you are a channel for life, not a benefactor keeping score.
In On Giving, Gibran overturns the idea that generosity is measured in possessions. "You give but little when you give of your possessions," he says. "It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." The truly generous give as the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space — naturally, without keeping score.
He praises those who give without anxiety about tomorrow: "There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward." Meanwhile the fearful hoard, but "is not dread of thirst when your well is full, the thirst that is unquenchable?" Clinging to what you have is its own kind of poverty.
Gibran even dissolves the pride of the giver. "You often say, 'I would give, but only to the deserving.'" But nature does not ration itself this way — "they who have the will to give... find all the earth for pantry." To give is not to be a benefactor above others; it is to remember you are only a channel through which life gives to life.
