Work is love made visible

💡 Work done with love is a form of self-expression and prayer — the spirit you put into a task becomes part of what you create.

When asked about labor, Gibran rejects both the view that work is a curse and that it is merely a way to pay bills. In On Work he declares that to work is to "keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth," and that "work is love made visible."

The distinction he draws is about how you work. "If you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work" and beg from those who labor joyfully. Bread baked with indifference "feeds but half a man's hunger." The spirit you pour into a task passes into whatever you make.

Gibran's vision is almost mystical: to "weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth." Ordinary labor becomes a form of prayer and self-expression. Idleness makes you a stranger to the seasons; loving work makes you a participant in life itself.
