There's a voice in your head — and it isn't you

💡 You are not the voice in your head; you are the one who hears it.

Michael Singer opens The Untethered Soul with a jarring observation: there is a voice narrating your life inside your head, and it almost never shuts up. It judges, worries, rehearses arguments, and comments on everything. Most people assume that voice is them. Singer's first move is to break that assumption.

Here's the tell: if you can hear the voice, you must be separate from it — the listener is not the same as the sound. Singer calls this mental narrator your inner roommate. Imagine someone actually followed you around saying everything the voice says; you'd consider them insane and move out. Yet you take that same running commentary as gospel truth about reality.

The voice's real job, Singer argues, is to make an unpredictable world feel manageable by talking about it. But narrating life is not the same as living it. Recognizing that you are the one aware of the voice — not the voice itself — is the doorway to everything else in the book.
