Who is the 'you' that notices you're thinking?

💡 Your true self is the silent awareness that witnesses your thoughts and feelings, not the thoughts and feelings themselves.

If you're not the voice, then who are you? Singer's answer is the heart of the book: you are the awareness behind everything — the one who witnesses thoughts, emotions, and sensations without being any of them. He calls this the Seat of Self, the seat of consciousness.

To point at it, Singer uses a simple test. You can watch your thoughts, so you're not your thoughts. You can feel your emotions, so you're not your emotions. You can sense your body, so you're not your body. Whatever is left — the silent witness that is aware of all of it — is the real you.

Most of us live pulled forward, our attention glued to whatever object is loudest: a worry, a craving, a memory. Singer's practice is to relax back into the seat of awareness and simply notice from there. From that vantage point, thoughts and feelings become passing weather, not commands. This shift — from being lost in experience to witnessing it — is what he means by awakening consciousness.
