The stored pain running your life has a name

💡 Buried emotional wounds (samskaras) either get protected — shrinking your life — or removed, which frees you.

When you close instead of letting an experience pass through, the blocked energy doesn't disappear — it gets stored. Singer uses the yogic term samskara: a trapped impression from an unfinished experience that stays lodged in you, waiting.

He compares an unresolved wound to a thorn pressed against your skin. You have two options. You can arrange your whole life so nothing ever touches the thorn — avoid certain people, topics, and situations — building elaborate walls of protection. Or you can remove the thorn. The first option looks safe but slowly shrinks your world; the second hurts briefly but frees you permanently.

Most people spend their lives protecting their thorns, which is why old fears and hurts silently dictate their choices decades later. Singer's point is that these stored samskaras are not you — they're just blocked energy patterns you've been guarding. Once you see that, guarding them starts to look absurd.
