Tear down the wall you built to feel safe
💡 The inner walls you build to feel safe are the very cage that keeps you from freedom — growth means letting them fall.
Over a lifetime of closing and storing, we each build an inner wall of protection — a set of rules, defenses, and comfort zones designed to keep anything disturbing from reaching us. Singer's provocative claim is that this wall, meant to protect us, is actually the cage that keeps us from freedom and love.
Behind the wall we feel temporarily safe, but we also live in a shrunken, defended version of ourselves, constantly managing threats that are mostly just old samskaras. Real growth, Singer says, means being willing to stay behind nothing — to let life touch the tender place instead of reflexively defending it.
He reframes every uncomfortable moment as an opportunity: whenever you feel the urge to defend, you've found an edge of your wall. Choosing to relax through it rather than protect is how the wall comes down, brick by brick. On the other side is not devastation but a vastly larger, freer experience of being alive.
