Only 13 teams showed up to the first World Cup — and the host won it all
💡 The 1930 World Cup in Uruguay had just 13 teams because most Europeans refused to sail — but it launched the biggest event in sports.
The very first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, and it was far from the global spectacle we know today. Most European nations refused to make the long sea voyage across the Atlantic, so only 13 teams participated — 7 from South America, 4 from Europe, and 2 from North America.
Uruguay, the host nation, stormed through the tournament and beat Argentina 4-2 in the final in front of 68,000 fans at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. The stadium wasn't even finished when the tournament started — workers were still laying concrete during the early matches.
Despite the low turnout, the 1930 World Cup proved that an international football tournament could work. It laid the foundation for what would become the biggest single-sport event on Earth, now featuring 48 teams as of the 2026 edition.
