Maradona scored the best and worst goals in history — in the same game
💡 Maradona's 1986 quarter-final featured both the 'Hand of God' cheat and the 'Goal of the Century' — in the same match, four minutes apart.
On June 22, 1986, Diego Maradona produced two of the most famous goals in football history within four minutes of each other during Argentina's World Cup quarter-final against England in Mexico City.
The first was the infamous "Hand of God" — Maradona punched the ball into the net with his fist, and the referee didn't see it. When asked afterward, Maradona said the goal was scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God." It remains one of the most controversial moments in sports.
Then, just four minutes later, Maradona picked up the ball in his own half and dribbled past six English players — covering 60 meters in 10 seconds — before slotting home what FIFA later voted the "Goal of the Century." One game, two goals, and both are still talked about nearly 40 years later.
